Humanities Montana and its Center for the Book are in the process of updating the roster of discussion leaders for OpenBook, our reading and discussion series. A typical OpenBook reading and discussion group series involves four to six books, normally focusing on a theme (Women’s Voices of the West or Lewis and Clark, for example). A reading and discussion group reads one book every two to four weeks and then meets to discuss the work. Humanities Montana provides the books and a scholar to lead each of the discussions. You may be contacted to lead one discussion in a series, or every discussion in a series.

Your professional guidance and expertise as literary critic, historian, scholar and discussion leader are what the groups require. You need not develop a lecture—discussion groups prefer that the discussion leader provide a brief ten to fifteen minute introduction to the text and then use the remaining program time for discussion. Humanities Montana will provide you with discussion guides (when available) to assist you in preparing.

Programs are presented at local libraries, community colleges, and adult education centers throughout the state. We ask that interested discussion leaders agree to be available for a two- year period.

  • Honoraria for discussion leaders is $125 per session, plus expenses
  • Prospective OpenBook sponsors will be given a list of scholars who have indicated their interest in serving as discussion leaders. Sponsors will then contact scholars directly.
  • Scholars need only accept those programs which are convenient and of interest. On average a discussion leader will not be contacted more than a few times each year.
  • If a reading and discussion is approved, Humanities Montana will verify the times and location of each program with the discussion leaders.
