> about us

Humanities Montana is Montana's independent, nonprofit affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), founded in 1972 by thirteen Montana citizens—academic and civic leaders—in response to Congress' National Arts and Humanities Act of 1965. Since that time, Humanities Montana has benefited hundreds of Montana organizations and thousands of its citizens, providing support for public programs in the humanities throughout the state. Humanities Montana's educational and cultural programs help Montanans develop a deeper understanding of humanity's values and beliefs, intellectual achievements, diverse cultures, and heritages.

VISION Humanities Montana will enrich the lives of all Montanans by fostering inquiry and stimulating civil and informed conversations about the human experience.

Be sure to read Humanities Montana's 2011-2015 Strategic Plan to learn more about the organization's vision for the coming years.
MISSION

Humanities Montana believes in the capacity of the humanities—history, literature, philosophy, religious studies, ethics, and more—to

  • Stimulate reflection
  • Create knowledge
  • Resolve problems
  • Inspire delight.

We provide and support public programs that

  • Explore issues of enduring and contemporary concern
  • Encourage critical thinking
  • Examine civic issues
  • Deepen our understanding of where we have been, where we are, and where we are going.

"Humanities programs have been a great opportunity for those in far eastern Montana...exposure to programs that would not be available to them. It has been a life saver here in eastern Montana. We thank you for making them available to us."
