enews for march 2012

Humanities Montana is raising $40,000 for its endowment to celebrate its 40 years of service to Montana—and to pave the way for more great work for years to come. Look for an e-mail in early March—and join the campaign.

We are looking for new presentations for the statewide program Montana Conversations: Speakers Bureau and Speakers in the Schools. Do you have an expertise in history, literature, public affairs, or other humanities topics? Would you like to lead interactive discussions with your fellow Montanans? Montana Conversations offers high quality programs to community organizations and schools across the state, paying speakers an honorarium and travel expenses.

Applications to join this roster of humanities scholars will be accepted until March 20. Applicants must submit an online application, including a narrative description of their presentation, two references, and, if possible, an example of their work, such as a video. For more information or to fill out the application visit this website. New programs will become available to the public as of July 1, 2012.

The board and staff of Humanities Montana will recognize Helena Humanities Heroes during a reception in All Saints Hall, Carroll College at 5 pm on Saturday, April 21. Free and open to the public! For more information about these remarkable citizens, go here.

What are your rights under the Montana and U. S. Constitutions? What is native sovereignty, as defined in both constitutions? What is Montana's relationship with the federal government? Talk about these and other issues during "We the People: Conversations on the Montana and U. S. Constitutions," April 20–21 at Carroll College. Visit this website for more information. Special thanks to our sponsors and partners on this project.

Profound thanks to the Stillwater Mining Company for donating $5,000 to Humanities Montana to fund speakers presenting historical and cultural information on mining and natural resources in south-central Montana. Look for programs in that region over the next year focused on these crucial Montana issues.

"Spring 2012 Book Discussion," Broadus Friends of Literacy, Broadus, $600. Three reading and discussion sessions led by a facilitator, February–April, 2012.

"Jennifer Greene Reading and Lecture on Salishan Language," Carroll College, Helena, $700. Poet, teacher, and Salish linguist Jennifer Greene will lead discussions, read from her work and teach language exercises to college and elementary students and the public on March 23, 2012.

"Poet Laureate Podcasts for Classrooms," Missoula Writing Collaborative, Missoula, $1000. Support for the creation of ten fifteen-minute podcasts available for classrooms throughout Montana as well as the general public following lesson plans and topics from Montana Poet Laureate Sheryl Noethe.

The next deadline for grants $5,000 and above is April 20. Because our grant funds are fast disappearing, this is likely to be the last chance to apply for a grant above $1,000 until the August 20 deadline.

Humanities Montana is especially interested in proposals focused on the 40th anniversary of the Montana Constitution and the 150th anniversary of Montana Territory. Full information on grant guidelines and deadlines is available at Grants.

We're trying to attract 500 Facebook fans in 2012! Help us reach our goal and keep in touch with fellow humanists by liking us at Facebook and inviting your friends. Follow us on Twitter as well, and check out our YouTube channel to revisit major humanities events, including the Butte Digital Film project and a provocative conversation on "The State of Montana" with Pat Williams and Lorents Grosfeld.
