  • "Sixth Annual Hi-Line Documentary Film Festival and Shorts Competition," Yellow Bus Creations, Inc., Havre, $750. Support for community discussions during a film festival on the Hi-Line related to the social and physical environment and the issues around gas exploration in America.
  • "Bent Grass Poetry Troupe Eastern Montana Tour," Bent Grass Poetry Troupe, Dillon, $500. Support for the troupe to tour eastern Montana presenting poetry readings, workshops and meetings with local literary groups.
  • "2012 Museums Association of Montana Annual Conference," Museums Association of Montana, Bozeman, $750. Support for production of conference brochure and a day-long workshop on firearms care in museums presented by a firearms collection management professional.
  • "Homesteading in Central Montana," Lewistown Public Library, Lewistown, $700. Support for an exhibit that documents the cultural, regional and historical aspect of homesteading in central Montana through archived photos and written descriptions.
  • "Suessville University 2012," Rocky Mountain College Campus Corps, Billings, $500. Support for a one-day, educational program celebrating Dr. Suess and providing a Dr. Suess book to each child participant.
  • "The Montana Constitution's 40th Celebration," Montana Constitutional Society, Missoula, $500. Support for video recording of the one-day program celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Montana Constitution, to distribute to school libraries and the Montana Historical Society, June 15, 2012.
  • "Extreme History Lecture Series," Extreme History Project, Livingston, $1000. Support for a series of monthly lectures by distinguished scholars and researchers in the fields of history, archeology, and anthropology to present new research in these fields to the general public. Funding for this grant was provided by Foundant Technologies.
  • "Lost and Found Montana," The University of Montana, Missoula, $5000. Support for a website showcasing the stories of 18 Montana towns on the brink of extinction whose fate was determined by the Montana Department of Transportation's new highway map.
  • "Toole County Heritage Audio Tour," City of Shelby, Shelby, $4000. Support for the development of an audio CD and brochure that provides a walking/driving guide to the Shelby region's great history and heritage, including the coming of the railroad, the discovery of oil and gas, the homesteading era, and the infamous World Heavyweight Championship Fight of 1923.
  • "Centennial Exhibit—Connecting Cultures," Big Horn County Historical Society, Hardin, $3000. Support for a variety of exhibits interpreting history and culture at the newly constructed main building of the Big Horn County Historical Society in celebration of the museum's 100th anniversary.
  • "Spring 2012 Book Discussion," Broadus Friends of Literacy, Broadus, $600. Three reading and discussion sessions led by a facilitator, February–April, 2012.
  • "Jennifer Greene Reading and Lecture on Salishan Language," Carroll College, Helena, $700. Poet, teacher, and Salish linguist Jennifer Greene will lead discussions, read from her work and teach language exercises to college and elementary students and the public on March 23, 2012.
  • "Poet Laureate Podcasts for Classrooms," Missoula Writing Collaborative, Missoula, $1000. Support for the creation of ten fifteen-minute podcasts available for classrooms throughout Montana as well as the general public following lesson plans and topics from Montana Poet Laureate Sheryl Noethe.
  • "Missoula MLK Day Community Celebration," NCBI Missoula, Missoula, $1000. Support for an event celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day through community engagement and discussion. January 16, 2012.
  • "Bozeman Senior Center Book Club," Bozeman Senior Center, Bozeman, $1000. Seniors in Bozeman meet the third Monday of each month February through September 2012 to read and discuss novels with a facilitator.
  • "Privacy in the Digital Age," Lewis and Clark National Forest and Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center, Great Falls, $1000. Support for an all-day public workshop led by an expert on social media and media librarian to explore modern privacy issues. April 26, 2012.
  • "Darby Community Public Library Spring Book Discussion Series," Darby Public Community Library, Darby, $700. Support for the monthly book discussions at the Darby Community Public Library the third Wednesday of each month February through May, with an additional discussion group on April 4, 2012.
  • "Darby Community Public Library Conner Book Discussion Group Spring Series 2012," Darby Public Community Library, Darby, $700. Support for the monthly book discussions at the West Fork Mountain Crafts facility in Conner February 8, March 7, April 11 and May 9, 2012.
  • "Filmmakers in the Schools at BSDFF 2012," Big Sky Film Institute, Missoula, $1000. Support for documentary film screenings and discussions with filmmakers at area high schools with programming that ties to Diversity Week curriculum.
  • "The Woman Who Loved Mankind: The Life of a Twentieth-century Crow Elder by Lillian Bullshows Hogan," University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln, Nebraska, $2130. Support for indexing of the forthcoming book, an autobiography of Lillian Bullshows Hogan.
  • "Children of the Hill: The Meaning and Making of Childhood in Butte, Montana, 1900-1960," Montana Historical Society Press, Helena, $2000. Support for the publication of a study of childhood in Butte by Janet Finn.
  • "Mexican Migrant Families," Naomi Lapidus Shin, Missoula, $4000. Research Fellowship to study Mexican migrant workers and their families who travel to the Flathead Valley to pick cherries each summer.
  • "Tainted Revelations: The Art of Bill Ohrmann," Joseph A. Nickell, Missoula, $2000. Research Fellowship to research and write a biographical history of Drummond artist Bill Ohrmann.
  • "Monuments to Travel: Montana's Historic Railway Stations," Mark Hufstetler, Bozeman, $4000. A Research Fellowship to support a comprehensive, statewide effort to identify the surviving historic railway depots in Montana.
  • "Montana International Children's Film Festival," Alliance Francaise, Missoula, $2000. Support for a foreign film festival aimed at families, with screenings, workshops, and talks by international students at the University of Montana.
  • "Planning Kootenai Summer 2012," AlterNative Solutions, Pablo, $5000. Support for a new language acquisition method, "Where Are Your Keys?" on the Flathead Reservation.
  • "Reflections West, Year 3," Missoula Writing Collaborative, Missoula, $6000. Support for the five-minute radio program featuring short reflective essays about what it means to live in the West, aired on public radio throughout Montana.
  • "The Coal Export Conversation: Billings and Coal Trains," Yellowstone Valley Citizens Council, Billings, $3000. A two-day conference to share information about plans to increase train traffic through Billings.
  • "Community Discussion of the Social and Cultural Impact of the Energy Boom in Eastern Montana," Miles City Public Library, Miles City, $3000. A community discussion, using the Gracious Space method, about the social and cultural impact of the energy boom in Eastern Montana.
  • "'Where Are Your Keys?' Rapid Language Acquisition Workshop," AlterNative Solutions, Dixon, $1,000. All day language acquisition seminar to help community members learn and teach Kootenai and Salish with technique creator Evan Gardner. December 17, 2011.
  • "A Montana Ireland Exhibition," Butte-Silver Bow Public Archives, Butte, $3,548. Creation of nine permanent exhibit panels interpreting the immigration of the Irish and their influence on the culture of Montana, which will travel to Ireland and around the state.
  • "The Path less Traveled: Montana Preservation Road Show," Montana Preservation Alliance, Helena, $4,500. Historic preservation conference that begins on the UM-Western campus in Dillon and continues aboard two buses that take conference participants into the cultural landscape. May 31-June 2, 2012.
  • "Global Connections—Academic WorldQuest," World Affairs Council of Montana, Missoula, $2,500. Support for the Global Connections International Education Day, featuring a full day of international issues related to programming developed to connect Montana high school students and teachers with the world around them. February 28, 2012.
  • "2012 ServeMontana Symposium," Governor's Office of Community Service, Helena, $1,000. Support for bringing high school and college AmeriCorp members to the third annual ServeMontana Symposium , which highlights the importance of engaging in community service, February 23-24, 2012.
  • "Children's Festival of the Book," Bozeman Public Library, Bozeman, $1000. The Bozeman Public Library presents the fourth annual Children's Festival of the Book with award-winning children's book authors David Shannon, Marla Frazee and Liz Garton Scanlon on November 4 and 5, 2011.
  • "Helena Festival of the Book," Myrna Loy Center, Helena, $800. The tenth annual Helena Festival of the Book is an intimate literary event where readers can hear Montana and Western writers read and discuss Montana literature on November 12, 2011.
  • "Tripping," Havre-Hill County Library, Havre, $808.45. The library holds these reading and discussion groups focused on the theme of travel every other Thursday from January 26 through March 22.
  • "Broadus Friends of Literacy Book Discussion," Broadus Friends of Literacy, Broadus, $500. Jean Nelson leads book discussions on Montana novels and bestsellers at the Henry Malley Memorial Library on the fourth Monday of November and January.
  • "Class Guest Speakers," Montana State University-Northern, Havre, $1000. This project brings four guest speakers into the university class "Montana Indians: Cultures, Histories and Contemporary Issues." All funded sessions will be open to the public.
  • "Great Falls Festival of the Book," Great Falls Public Library, Great Falls, $1000. The twelfth annual Great Falls Festival of the Book brings six Montana authors, a writers' group, workshop and Word Meister competition to celebrate the written word in the month of March.
  • "Mossadegh: The Story of Freedom in Iran," West of Kin Productions, Missoula, $5000. This film will chronicle the life of the Iranian leader who was ousted by an American-led CIA covert operation in 1953.
  • "The Ride of Real Bird," Metamorph Films, Livingston, $4500. This grant funds research for a documentary following Crow cowboy poet Henry Real Bird as he retraces on horseback the route across Montana his ancestors took when they were first sent to their reservation.
  • "Red Montana," Research Foundation of SUNY, University at Albany, Elizabethtown, New York, $7000. This film, radio programs, and website explore the regional communist movement in Sheridan County, Montana, during the 1920s and '30s, focusing on antagonisms and cultural conflicts in the town and country.
  • "Indian Relay," Montana PBS, Bozeman, $7500. The hope and determination of American Indian life is revealed in this documentary about what it takes to win one of the most exciting forms of horse racing practiced anywhere in the world today.
  • "9 Pieces of Peace," Quiet Island Films, Saint Paul, Minnesota, $5000. This documentary tells the story of how a midnight "art crime" on a northern hillside in Montana changed the inner and outer landscape of a city and its residents forever.
  • "Two Rivers," High Plains Films, Missoula, $3000. This film documents change in the culture, economy and landscape of Montana in the 21st century through the lens of the confluence of the Blackfoot and Clark Fork rivers.
  • "Advancing Interpretation at Ravalli County Museum," Bitterroot Cultural Heritage Trust, Hamilton, $7322. Combining museum training with the creation of a travelling exhibit for the Nez Perce Trail, the Ravalli County Museum will partner with SeaReach, the Nez Perce tribe, the Forest Service, and Humanities Montana Speakers Bureau.
  • "Home Ground Radio," Artemis Common Ground, Helena, $8,000. This weekly half-hour radio program explores areas of conflict in history, literature, and current events looking for common ground. It airs on Montana Public Radio (MTPR) at 1 pm Wednesdays, and on Yellowstone Public Radio (YPR) at 6:30 pm Tuesdays.
  • "I'll Take the High Road: Transparency, Accountability and 2012 Elections," National Institute on Money in State Politics, Helena, $7500. This panel discussion features national leaders in the political and corporate transparency and accountability area on May 15, 2012 from 7:00 to 9:30 pm at Flathead Valley Community College in Kalispell, and will be filmed for public broadcast and classroom use.
  • "Montana Medicine Show/Sonic ID's Two Minute Radio Program," KGLT, Bozeman, $7500. These two-minute radio shows share stories about Montana's history and people.
  • "The Write Question," Montana Public Radio, Missoula, $4000. This radio program and podcast features the literature of the western United States in 30-minute interviews with fiction, nonfiction, and poetry authors from the region. It airs Thursday evenings at 7:30 pm on MTPR and at 6:30 pm on YPR.
  • "Montana National History Day," Montana State University Billings, Billings, $2728. This grant provides support for outreach and research with schools participating in the National History Day contest.
  • "Art Trails: Ascent to the Rockies," Yellowstone Art Museum, Billings, $2000. This two-day conference includes art historians, curators, and artists who reflect on what makes the art of the Northern Rockies/Northern Plains region distinctive from North America's other cultural geographies.
  • "Get on the Bus—Freedom Riders," Friends of Montana PBS, Bozeman, $4000. These community conversations use the PBS program "Freedom Riders" as the impetus for discussions about the history of racism in this country as well as the status of discrimination and civil engagement today.
  • "Reading Young Adult Literature through Indigenous Eyes," Fort Belknap College, Harlem, $1000. Through literature circles inviting readers to read and discuss eight young adult novels with Native American protagonists, this project addresses issues of identity formation, reading motivation and literacy development for American Indian youth.
