Hometown Humanities brings a year’s worth of humanities-based programming to a single community. Community members choose approximately 25 educational and cultural programs from Humanities Montana's catalog of offerings—public speakers, speakers in the schools, community discussions and more. These programs are scheduled over the course of twelve months, so that every few weeks there is a new—and free!—humanities-based event available to the public.

We're proud to announce that Miles City is this year's program recipient. All Montanans are invited to visit Miles City, take part in coming events, and show support for the humanities.

WHAT'S COMING UP

June 7 — "A Visit with Teddy Roosevelt" with Arch Ellwein

Meet the vibrant 26th president of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt. Even Roosevelt’s critics admired the man who took on the corporate trusts, charged up San Juan Hill, defied the Party “bosses,” built the Panama Canal, defined conservation and won a Nobel Peace Prize. Hear his views on conservation, agriculture, and democracy, all shaped by his Western experience. Portrayed by Ellwein, President Roosevelt talks of his experiences in Montana as a rancher and sportsman.

June 7, 2:00pm, Miles City Public Library. This event will be free and open to the public

June 20 — "I Do: A Cultural History of Montana Weddings" with Martha Kohl

Almost nothing is more personal than getting married, yet few rituals are more thoroughly influenced by larger cultural forces than weddings. Kohl discusses how weddings changed over the years and how they have remained the same. Through stories of weddings past—from the 1860s gold rush through the 1950s—she reveals the history of Montana, the people who lived here, and what we value today.

June 20, 7:00pm, First Presbyterian Church. This event will be free and open to the public

SUPPORT HOMETOWN HUMANITIES

Your donation will directly support humanities-based programming in Miles City!

The aim of Hometown Humanities is to support deeply the particular cultural interests of a Montana community, and by doing so explore the capacity of the humanities to enrich lives, foster inquiry, and stimulate civil and informed conversations about the human experience.
