Health and wellness challenges significantly affect all of us, and food is a big part of that. By looking at cultural food habits, students compare the Standard American Diet (SAD) to all of our native traditions. Through mini research projects, food logs, and the science behind nutrition, students learn that our ancestors ate much differently than we do and we are paying the price for modern choices. Joyce works with students to raise awareness of everyday decisions regarding food and how these impact our health. Joyce works with teachers to show how working together on an interdisciplinary approach to a single theme treats the “whole” student in making real world connections. Working cross-curricular allows for rewarding professional collaboration among teachers.
