Spotlight on the Democracy Project in Wibaux, Montana

Throughout the school year, students on the WCHS Student Council dedicated themselves to learning what it means to be a good citizen. They explored how citizenship involves understanding civic processes and actively participating in and contributing to the well-being of their school and local community.
A major focus of the Student Council was creating a positive and inclusive school environment—a place where all students feel they belong. To that end, they organized various initiatives that brought students and staff together, strengthened school pride, and supported their peers.
Some of the highlights from this year included a visit to the local courthouse, where students gained firsthand insight into the roles and responsibilities of elected representatives and how they serve the community. They also sponsored the purchase of three new school flags—one for each elementary and high school gyms, and one for the football field—boosting school pride and visibility.
To bring joy and connection to the school community, the Student Council put on an Easter egg hunt for junior high and high school students and staff. They also marked the 100th day of school with celebratory donuts and honored Teacher Appreciation Week by providing muffins for both elementary and high school staff. In a final touch of school spirit, they installed a decorative fence on campus to showcase their enthusiasm and pride.
By participating in The Democracy Project, teens not only learned about democracy in action—they lived it. – Wibaux High School librarian
