Heirlooms: Family History Writing Workshop – Dr. Molly Barari

Do you consider yourself the family historian? Do you have more subscriptions to genealogy services than to streaming TV services? Then this workshop is probably for you!
This interactive workshop helps you organize what you know about your family history into interesting stories. You’ll use the facts you’ve gleaned through your research to bring a story (or stories) from your family history back to life, using vivid description and sensory detail.
We will cover some research and genealogy methods that will support your writing process, but it will be helpful to come into the class with a working knowledge of genealogy and your personal family history. For this workshop, you’ll want to have an ancestor in mind that you have already researched to begin writing about.
Throughout the workshop, sharing will be encouraged. You’ll need to bring a pen and paper or use word processing software on your computer.
Presented by Dr. Molly Barari, who holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, PA, and an EdD in Adult Education from University of South Dakota. She feels honored to have helped hundreds of South Dakotans begin writing their life stories through her “Heirlooms: Creative Life Writing” workshops, both as a South Dakota Humanities Council Speakers Bureau scholar and through other community-based workshops. When she’s not writing or teaching, she loves exploring the Black Hills and watching classic horror films.
