Evening Solitude
after a painting by Howard Pepion

There is a man near the edge of the water
preparing his meal while the sun sets behind him
As I move in closer, the scene becomes more familiar
As I get closer, the scene becomes more like home
I imagine myself standing there, staring at the sun setting behind the mountains
I watch as the river rushes by and fish leap into the air
I see the trees sway back and forth as the wind gently rocks them to sleep
The grass lays flat as it settles in for the night breezes as the gopher pups run around
As much as they can before it is time to settle down and rest
