Democracy Project teens at Wibaux High School are “here to help!” Responding to community requests they have already completed several service projects this fall including a fair tear down, wrapped gifts for students in need, and bringing cardboard to the nearest recycling center in Glendive, almost 30 miles away. Democracy Project students presented their research to the Wibaux County Health Department on the amount of caffeine in students’ favorite drinks and snacks. Teens were also concerned about food insecurity and organized a food drive during the government shutdown.
Volunteers at the food bank visited about the importance of donations at this time, when people asking for help is at an all-time high and donations “aren’t what they used to be.”
At their regular meetings, teens also discussed what it means to be citizens in a participatory democracy, and learned about non-partisanship. They visited with their local elected officials at the courthouse asking questions about what they do, how they were elected, and how long they have been serving. Students also picked up the form they needed to register to vote.
