United We Stand
In October, Humanities Montana launched its new United We Stand initiative, in coordination with National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), to combat hate-based violence through cultural engagement. Humanities Montana has utilized the United We Stand initiative to create new, and support ongoing, programs that inspire community conversations on historical inequities in Montana, combat polarization and divisiveness, increase media literacy, and facilitate discussions on difficult issues. The United We Stand initiative will support seven new and three existing Montana Conversations and Speakers in the Schools programs. The new programs cultivated by United We Stand are:
- Free Speech, Sedition, and Montana During World War I with Dr. Keith Edgerton
- Empowering Voices: Addressing the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples Epidemic with Buck Hitswithastick
- Legacy Reclaimed: Honoring Montana’s Indigenous Narrative and Sovereignty with Buck Hitswithastick,
- Montana’s Historic Chinese Communities with Mark Johnson
- The Art of Transformation with Katie Knight
- Survival and Loss — Indigenous Boarding Schools with Kim Quigley
- Trust Me with Rosemary Smith
Ongoing program presentations with Montana Conversations and Speakers in the School supported by the United We Stand initiative include:
- Jeannette Rankin: American Conscience with Mary Jane Bradbury
- Latino History in Montana with Bridget Kevane
- Hazel Hunkins of Montana: Continuing the Fight for Women’s Rights with Kevin Kooistra
