One Book Montana, the statewide read of “Becoming Little Shell: A Landless Indian’s Journey Home” by Chris La Tray, culminated with a collaborative gathering at the Flathead Valley Community College. In addition to an hour-long author talk, over 120 participants were also treated to a photography exhibit from students at Salish Kootenei College and Two Eagle River School. The artists were present to discuss their work. Bison and wild rice meatballs and other foods native to the Americas were provided by Mariah Gladstone of Indigikitchen.
Participants visited tables with different prompts for book discussion and community building. One Book Montana asks the question: “What if everyone in Montana read the same book…?” This event was the result of a robust collaboration between the Flathead County Libraries, Whitefish Community Library, and the Flathead Valley Community College Library with support from Humanities Montana.
