Democracy Project Participates in Democracy Days: Spotlight on Miles City Public Library

Teens Register Voters in Miles City During Democracy Days

Democracy Project sites are holding voter registration drives! Three sites, Columbia Falls High School, Wibaux High School, and Miles City Public Library, participated in Democracy Days, a peer-to-peer voter registration drive across Montana held annually in March and presented by Civics Under the Big Sky.

This exciting event brings high schoolers across the state access to voter registration services, leadership development opportunities, and volunteer experiences. For example, in Miles City, Democracy Project teens held their drive at the Miles Community College (MCC) and registered 25 college students and verified existing registrations for 6 additional people.

It’s pretty cool to have young students so interested in civics,” library director Sarah Peterson told the Miles City Star. “These kids are starting to recognize how things work and why we should be involved in our communities.”

We’ve talked a lot about how our voices matter on many levels in our schools, our communities, and as citizens. They’re learning that nothing happens in a vacuum, and I hope they are starting to feel comfortable using their voices but also learning to really listen and participate in groups.”

I am really grateful for MCC’s support,” Peterson said. “We hit an important demographic with young adults. Our students handled all the details for the event, including getting permission from the college. They took this project and ran with it, and it’s pretty rewarding for them to have success.”
