Humanities Montana’s award-winning teen civic education and engagement program, The Democracy Project, launches the 2026-27 program year with seven libraries in the full program and three libraries in the soft launch. The soft launch is a shorter program where libraries build a teen audience. There is still time to join the soft launch which kicks off in January 2027! Apply on the Democracy Project homepage.
The Democracy Project is always situated in libraries – foundational institutions of our American democracy. Each year sites design and implement a community based project in collaboration with local civic partners. Some projects from past years include putting a bill in support of teen mental health services in front of the state legislature, building a community greenspace and outdoor classroom, holding an anti-cyberbulling day, memorial tree planting and more. Current and past projects are spotlighted on the Democracy Project homepage.
2026-27 is a legislative session year for Montana’s biennial legislature and teens will be following legislation with a goal of making a trip to Helena in March. This year will also focus on education about our 1972 Montana State Constitution and voter registration drives.
