Democracy Project Sites Brainstorm Possible Project Ideas

The Democracy Project site at the Boulder Community Library has been partnering with a local teen leadership non-profit, the Southwest Montana Youth Partners. This group began their brainstorming by taking the 2 minute quiz to determine which of the United Nations Global Goals were most important to them. These 17 global goals were agreed upon in 2016 by world leaders and include No Poverty, Zero Hunger, and Quality Education, for example. “The purpose of starting with the Global Goals quiz is to highlight the areas in which youth are most passionate. That is a good starting point for discussing global issues and how we can address them locally. This helps drive the youth voice in choosing the local project and ensures that they care about the project they choose.” said Rochelle Hesford of Southwest Montana Youth Partners.

The Boulder Community Library group completed the Democracy Project soft launch last year, even bringing a full project across the finish line. The group picked up over 65 pounds of trash from irrigation ditches in their community to protect livestock from ingesting plastic. The soft launch is a shorter program where librarians work to build a teen audience prior to joining the full program.
