Program Description

This talk is about place—how land, water, and air shapes us, just as we shape place. In such rapidly changing times, how might we reset our attention to the intimacy of time and motion? How might meditations on the kinetics of narrative and language invite us to participate more fully with our human and more-than-human kin communities? Can stories of place, route-finding, endurance, and resilience help us regain a sense of humanity, while offering tools to care urgently for the more-than-human world? In this session, Triolo braids literature, ecology, and culture to invite each participant on a pilgrimage home—to identify the stories and myths we all follow in life. Pulling from multiple traditions and forms, Triolo explores how place-knowing and language conspire to shape our perception and, in turn, inspire us to take visionary action, transforming culture and ourselves in response to the uncertain times ahead.

Presenter Bio

Nicholas Triolo is an author, editor, and educator living in Missoula, Montana. With a Masters of Science in environmental nonfiction, Triolo has worked in publishing for over ten years—editor-in-chief, Camas; digital strategist, Orion; senior editor, Outside/Trail Runner; managing editor, Magic Canoe. He’s taught place-based writing for the University of Montana, Yale/Oxford Academia, Wild Rockies Field Institute, Writing the Wild, Freeflow Institute, and the Missoula Writing Collaborative. Triolo’s words, photography, and films have been featured in Orion, Emergence, Dark Mountain Project, Outside, Terrain.org, and others. His book, The Way Around, was published by Milkweed Editions in July 2025, and has been featured in People, Longreads, and the Los Angeles Review of Books.
