Democracy Project Teens Share with Sister School in Ohio

Democracy Project teens at Columbia Falls High School brainstormed project ideas. They started by putting all ideas on the whiteboard and then color-coding how many times an idea came up. As they, and other Democracy Project sites across Montana, choose a project, they will consider how to interact with their school board, local government, and community organizations to bring their idea to life in service to their community. The group held a passionate discussion about how censorship impacts their lives as students. They will continue to discuss the best way to shine a light on their concerns and navigate bringing their concerns to their local leadership.

Columbia Falls teens are also participating in Democracy in Dialogue, a national virtual exchange program sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution’s Rural Initiatives program. They sent postcards and videos to their sister school in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Other project ideas being discussed around the state include teen driver and traffic safety, teen mental health, tree planting, memorials, food insecurity, childcare, Holocaust education, meeting community needs, and voter registration drives. The Democracy Project teens explore the following questions: What is something you want to preserve? What is something you want to change? What is a community need that is not being met?
