Teen-led Civic Participation
What is the Democracy Project?
The Democracy Project is a teen-led, non-partisan initiative supported by local libraries, community partners, and Humanities Montana. This program gives teens the resources to meet community needs while learning their role in an evolving democracy. What Teens are saying:
It feels good to make a difference in bettering our school. It’s great to see the transformation of the weight room and seeing students and visitors enjoying it more. I’m excited for our vending machine to arrive and to see our school community using it.
Being able to meet new people and have roots in the community.
The unveiling, I think, was one of our biggest successes, of course completing the website was amazing! But getting to reveal our hard work to the public was a wonderful feeling. The teamwork and getting to see people coming together to change something instead of just sitting back and complaining.
Getting to work with a bunch of cool speakers and being able to receive active updates on what was going on in our government…When teens know what’s going on and the benefits to it, they’re much more likely to want to participate.
I realized that a simple thought or idea can become a reality very quickly. I love how we all decided a garden would be great but were worried about actually following through. Throughout the Democracy Project, I have seen how that idea has developed and created a diverse change at our school.
